An author is an individual who creates a copyrighted work.
When two or more authors collaborate on a single work and their individual contributions cannot be distinguished, this is known as joint authorship (for example, two scholars writing one article).
If two or more authors create separate works intended to be used together (for example, one writes the lyrics and another composes the music), this is referred to as co-authorship.
An author cannot be a legal entity (e.g. a company or association). However, a legal entity can be the rightholder of the author's economic and other rights.
