Is the thesis supervisor a co-author?

If the supervisor merely provides guidance and advice to the student but does not actively contribute to the research or the writing of the thesis, they cannot be considered a co-author.

Given the fact that the thesis must be the result of the student’s independent work, situations in which a supervisor could be recognized as a co-author are exceptionally rare.
